Tiny post-mortem time!

So what have I made?

I’ve made a tiny interactive fiction game! And I actually finished it! My first piece of writing I’m publishing.

What went right?

  • The game was finished!
  • I managed to finish writing a tiny story! That’s new, so far I haven’t managed to actually finish a piece of IF.

What went wrong?

I blocked my old bank card, and while I was waiting for the new one opencode attempted to draw money, failed and now I’m without my AI assistant. Which meant I had to dig into the AI written code of the engine to handle a new file format (ink files), which was a pain.

I think I should have taken a day off before looking through the game a final time and polishing up whatever was left.

What’s next?

More interactive fiction!

I’m starting a challenge where I make a game in 10 hours over 2 days. This is to practice my scoping and getting shit done muscles.

Since 10 hours is very short I’ll reuse a lot of work from my old games, so I’ll probably stick quite close to this way of doing interactive fiction for a bit. We’ll see.

I also want to practice setting the scope before starting. Currently I kind of just start and then amble about until I find an ending point. Next game I want to give myself a box of “this is the start of the project, that’s the end goal” so I just have to fill in the blanks rather than try to figure out where the game should end.

I’ll try a workflow like:

  • find an existing thing to set the tone (music, art)
  • write the story
  • do art + music
  • playtest in engine
  • polish
  • set up the game page

That’s all!

Baiiiiiiiiiiii
